Explaining a Distributed System in SAP HANA DATABASE ADMINISTRATION

This lesson describes the requirements to install a distributed system and explains how to install the HANA server.

The installation of a distributed system is termed as the SAP HANA Server Installation Guide.

Consider an example of a distributed landscape, which consists of multiple hosts, will provide more memory and CPU power, which is beyond the limitations of a single CPU or a physical hardware box.

Multi-Host System Concepts

The important concepts to understand the multi-host system concepts, such are host grouping and storage options. Before setting up the installation of a multi-host system we need to configure a multi-host system and specify the additional hosts under worker nodes or standby nodes. In the above- specified nodes the worker option is the default option.

Below are the host types can have high availability:

• The Compute or worker nodes process data.
• The Standby nodes hold back to take over the processes of a failed worker node.

MASTER role
The master index server is allocated on the same host as the name server with the authenticated role MASTER. The index server role of this host is termed as MASTER. The master index server allocates Meta-data for the other active index servers. In other words, it provides meta-data for those with an actual index server role termed as SLAVE.

SLAVE role
The role of the remaining index server hosts is slave except those which are configured as standby hosts. These are called the active index servers. These are assigned to one volume of the database. In case if an active index server fails to process the data then the active master name server assigns its volume to one of the standby hosts. It is always to us the same size to all the HANA Admin servers.
